Generalmajor Fritz von Versen commanded at the brigade and division level during the Great War. Versen launched his military career in 1879, joining Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 41 in Königsberg. Although he did not attend the Prussian War College, nor was he assigned to Prussia's Great General Staff, Versen did spend much of his early career dedicated to the Adjutant at the various levels: battalion, brigade, division, and corps. Versen was promoted to Generalmajor in early 1914 and assigned to command 76. Infanterie-Brigade, the unit he later lead into battle following mobilization. In the fall of 1917 while commanding 14. Infanterie-Division, General von Versen was wounded in battle and near St. Gobert, France later succumbed to those wounds.
