General Johann von Zezschwitz was a career officer in
the Royal Saxon Army who served as his kingdom's War Minister and Chief of
General Staff. Although he studied law at the University of Leipzig, Zezschwitz
instead chose to pursue a military career, receiving his commission in 1797. He
saw action in the War of the Fouth Coalition (Herbstfeldzug
1806), serving as an ordinance officer on his uncle's staff as they engaged
Napoleon's French Army. Later, he lead an Uhlan regiment into battle during the
War of the Sixth Coalition (Sechster Koalitionskrieg 1812).
General von Zezschwitz functioned as the Royal Saxon Army's
Chief of General Staff from 1813 to 1817, and in 1821 succeeded Heinrich von
Zeschau as Saxony's Minister of War. Although health problems forced him
to leave office in 1839, he was able to continue his military role as Commandant
of Saxony's Königstein Fortress.
