Karl I. von Württemberg was the third sovereign leader to
rule the Kingdom of Württemberg. As the only son of Wilhelm I, he succeeded his
father as king in 1864 and remained on the throne until his death in October
1891. During Karl I's reign, Württemberg became part of the North German
Confederation (Norddeutscher Bund, 1867) and the German Empire (Deutsches
Reich, 1871). Karl was married to Alexandra Feodorovna, the daughter of
Nicholas I of Russia and granddaughter of Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia.
Since the two had no children, Karl I was succeeded upon his death by his
sister's son Wilhelm II.
