Paul Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt served from 1901 to 1902 as
the Royal Saxon Army's Chief of General Staff. He launched into his military
career as a non-commissioned officer during the Franco-Prussian
campaign of 1870. Following the war, he worked his way up to the rank of Major
and from 1893 to 1899 functioned as Saxony's Militärbevollmächtigter
(military plenipotentiary)at Great General Staff HQ in Berlin. Graf Vitzthum
finished his career in command of 23rd Infantry Division in Dresden. Although
retiring in 1908 as General der Infanterie z.D., he died three years later at
the age of 61.
