Alexander Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt was commanding
general at Royal Saxon XIX. Armeekorps headquarters prior to World War One.
He started his career as a soldier in 1866 and saw action during the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. In peacetime, he worked his way to
divisional commander and then in 1904 replaced Heinrich von Treitschke as XIX.AK
commander in Leipzig. His younger brother Woldemar was also a Saxon
general who headed up 58th Infantry Division during the Great War.
