General Verri della Bosia served as Bavaria's Chief of General
Staff from 1883 to 1888. an infantry officer from 1842 through 1890. Maximilian
was the son of Bavarian Generalmajor Carl Graf Verri della Bosia, descended from
ancient Piedmont nobility. Maximilian entered Bavarian military service and was
commissioned on 22 May 1843 as a Sekonde-Lieutenant. With a promotion to Major
in May 1866, Verri della Bosia fought against the Prussians during the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg). He was serving as Commandant
of Bavaria's War College (Kriegsschule) when again called to action, this time
fighting with Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71
(Deutsch-Französischer Krieg).
Following the Imperial
Proclamation in Versailles, Verri della Bosia returned to Bavaria to
serve as General Jakob von Hartmann's Chief of Staff at II. Armeekorps
headquarters in Würzburg. He remained in this function during the tenures
of both generals Joseph von Maillinger and Karl von Orff. In October 1877,
he was selected to command 7. Infanterie-Brigade, also headquartered in
Würzburg. He was sent to Munich in March 1883 to replace General Hugo
Ritter von Diehl as Bavaria's Chief of General Staff, a posting he would
maintain until May of 1888. He was then selected to the largely ceremonial
position of Generalkapitän der Leibgarde der Hartschiere and was
promoted to General der Infanterie in 1889.
