Gustav Freiherr von Senden-Bibran
was an admiral in the Prussian naval forces and Admiral à la suite in Kaiser Wilhelm II.'s entourage during the years leading up to the Great War. Gustav enlisted in the Prussian Navy in 1862. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg), he was the skipper of a gunboat during the Battle of Orléans. Following the Imperial Proclamation in Versailles, Senden-Bibran spent the subsequent decade traveling the world's oceans, twice circumnavigating the globe.

Upon Wilhelm II.'s accession to the throne in 1888, Senden-Bibran had the honor of captaining the ship SMS Bayern which transported the new Kaiser on a Baltic Sea voyage, and he was soon thereafter selected as one of the Kaiser's aide-de-camps (Flügeladjutant). Freiherr von Senden-Bibran later served as Wilhelm II.'s Chief of the Naval Cabinet (Marinekabinett) from 1889 through 1906 when he was forced to retire from active duty (zur Disposition) due to poor health. During his years as Cabinet Chief, he received promotion to Kontre-Admiral on 10 October 1892 and was brought on as Admiral à la suite in Wilhelm's headquarters. He was promoted to Vize-Admiral on 17 November 1899, and on 20 June 1901 was elevated to Generaladjutant to the Kaiser, a designation he would retain until his death in 1909. His final promotion to Admiral took place on 14 November 1903.
