Gustav Freiherr von Seckendorff was the director of Prussian military schools during the inter-war years. He additionally served as General à la suite in Kaiser Wilhelm II.'s retinue. Seckendorff entered military service in July 1864 as a Fahnenjunker in a füsilier battalion. As united German forces mobilized against France in the summer of 1870 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg), Seckendorff was a Sekonde-Lieutenant attached to 7. Thüringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 96. 

After the Franco-Prussian War, von Seckendorff was selected in March 1890 to serve as aide-de-camp to Kaiser Wilhelm II. On 25 March 1899, he was named commander of Prussia's Cadet Corps and elevated to General à la suite in the royal entourage. He was promoted to Generalleutnant on 27 January 1902 and was selected in June of that year as Inspector of the all military schools (Kriegsschulen). Upon retirement, Freiherr von Seckendorff was brevetted as a General der Infanterie.
