Friedrich Freiherr von Schele was a Prussian general who served as Governor of German East Africa (Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda) and Schutztruppe commander during Germany's pre-War years. Schele launched his military career in 1865 as a Sekonde-Lieutenant with Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 6 and saw action as an ordnance officer during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. He was later a cavalry brigade adjutant during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Following ten years of career progression as a cavalry officer, Freiherr von Schele was sent to German East Africa in 1892. He was soon functioning as both the Governor and Kaiserliche Schutztruppe Commander. Schele led several military engagements during this time and was awarded Germany's Pour le Mérite commendation medal for his actions against the Wahehe tribal combatants in 1894.

Upon returning to Berlin in 1895, Freiherr von Schele was selected as aide-de-camp to Kaiser Wilhelm II. and simultaneously commanded an 2. Garde-Kavallerie-Brigade. As a Generalleutnant, Freiherr von Schele headed up the 3rd Cavalry Inspectorate and later commanded Prussia's 16. Infanterie-Division. In February 1903, he was appointed as Governor of Mainz.
