Cavallerie
Cavalry general Gustav Waldemar von Rauch served as a Prussian military
officer during the wars with Austria and France. His father Gustav was Prussian
Minister of War Minister from 1837 to 1841. In 1848, Premier-Lieutenant von Rauch was
transferred from General Staff Headquarters to St. Petersburg, where he served
for four years as a military attaché in Tsar Nicholas II.'s royal court.
Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, General von Rauch
served for seven years as commander of 9. Infanterie-Division headquarters in Glogau, until
poor health forced his retirement from active duty in 1879. Kaiser Wilhelm I.,
nevertheless,
appointed General der Cavallerie von Rauch to serve as Chief of
the Landesgendarmerie (Prussia's national military police force) in Berlin, a posting
he retained until being replaced by his brother General Albert von Rauch in August 1888.
