Alfred von Rauch served as a general officer in the Prussian military during
the wars with Denmark 1864, Austria 1866, and France 1870. He was the son of Friedrich von
Rauch, General Adjutant to Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. During his
exemplary career as a cavalry officer, Alfred likewise served in Friedrich Wilhelm
IV's court as an aide-de-camp. Generalleutnant Alfred von Rauch was transferred
to the Prussian War Ministry in 1875 to head up the Remount Inspectorate,
a position he would maintain until 1883 when he was placed on active reserve
status as a brevet General der Cavallerie.
Kaiser Wilhelm I
soon thereafter selected von Rauch to serve in his entourage as an adjutant
general. From 1884 to 1894, he was assigned to
Great General Staff headquarters as head of the General-Ordenskommission
(charged with awarding military decorations). Upon Wilhelm I.'s death in 1888,
von Rauch continued serving as adjutant general und Kaisers Friedrich III. and
Wilhelm II.
