General Hugo Graf zu Münster-Meinhövel was a Prussian divisional
commander and adjutant general to Kaiser Wilhelm I. He was commissioned in 1829
as a cavalry officer and in 1845 was transferred as a Rittmeister to the
Regiment Garde du Corps in Potsdam. In 1850, Graf zu Münster-Meinhövel selected
to serve as an aide-de-camp King Friedrich Wilhelm IV.'s staff of adjutants.
During this period, he spent several years in St. Petersburg as Prussia's
military representative (Militärbevollmächtigter).
Upon his
return to Berlin, he was put in command of Garde du Corps. He was then
placed in charge of a cavalry division as Prussia entered the
Danish War of 1864 (Deutsch-Dänischer Krieg).
General-Lieutenant zu Münster-Meinhövel then from 1864 to October 1866 commanded
14. Division, subordinate to the Elbarmee during the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg). He and his troops
were engaged at Königgrätz, and Münster-Meinhövel
was decorated for his leadership with the Pour le Mérite. After the
war, he was dispatched to Hannover and charged with setting up 19. Division
headquarters. Illness forced him into retirement soon thereafter, but General zu
Münster-Meinhövel remained in uniform as an adjutant general until his death in
May 1880.
