Wilhelm Müller served during Germany's pre-War years as Kaiserliche
Schutztruppe commander in Cameroon, German West Africa. He
joined the Prussian military forces in 1868 with the East Prussian
Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 1. Upon receiving his commission in 1870, he saw
action as a lieutenant during Prussia's war with France. In 1895, at the rank of
Major, Müller transferred from Prussia's Heer to the Schutztruppe
and travelled to South West Africa (Namibia). Back in Germany by 1902, he served
with Infantry Regiment Nr. 48 in Küstrin and was promoted to Oberst. In 1903, he
was recalled to Cameroon in German West Africa, where he was appointed to
command the Schutztruppe contingent there. He remained at that post for
more than four years, having lead numerous expeditions and campaigns against
local combatants. He was brevetted with the rank of Generalmajor in April 1907
and later returned home to Germany to from active military duty.
