Prussian Chief of General Staff Karl Freiherr von Müffling began his military career as a Junker in the
Fusilier Battalion "von Schenck." As a lieutenant, he worked on the
Prussian General Staff (1802-03) and later as a captain (1805). He saw
action at Leipzig in 1814 and fought with
Wellington's staff in 1815. He then served as military governor of
Paris for about five months before working on Gneisenau's staff as
deputy quartermaster. Müffling
succeeded Rühle von
Lilienstern as Chief of General Staff (1821-29) and was president of
the state council (1838-47). He died in Erfurt on 16 January 1851.
