General von Lutz was Bavaria's Minister of War from 1863 to 1866. He began his military service in 1833 as a teenaged cadet. Following a successful 30-year career, Generalmajor von Lutz was appointed in 1863 to succeed General Karl von Liel as War Minister. During his tenure, Lutz was elevated into the Bavarian nobility but had to step down from the War Ministry following Bavaria's defeat to Prussian forces in 1863. After retiring from active duty, Lutz was brevetted in 1870 as a Generalleutnant.
