The Grand Duke ruled Hessia from 1877 until his death in
1892. As a General-Lieutenant he commanded the Grossherzogliche Hessische (25.)
Infantry Division during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He
continued serving in the military as Generaloberst with the rank of
Feldmarschall, achieving that rank in September 1891. Following his
death in March 1892 in Darmstadt, he was succeeded by his son Ernst
Ludwig IV. who served as Hessia's last Regent.
