Leopold Freiherr von Loën was a general officer serving in the Prussian Army
during Kaiser Wilhelm I.'s reign. Leopold's uncle was General der Kavallerie
August Georg von Hedemann, while his father-in-law was Prussian statesman
Heinrich von Bülow. Leopold launched his distinguished military career in
1834 when he enlisted in 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß in Potsdam. He was
commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant soon thereafter and in 1852 was assigned an
aide-de-camp in the service of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Freiherr von Loën then
served as Prussian military envoy at Russian Imperial Court in St. Petersburg
from 1857 to 1865.
With a promotion to Generalmajor,
von Loën was transferred back to Berlin to command 4. Garde-Infanterie-Brigade.
During the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg), his brigade saw
great success in the Battle at Königgrätz. The Franco-Prussian War
of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg) saw General von
Loën in command of the
Garde-Landwehr-Division, which took part in the Siege of Paris.
He received a war-time promotion to General-Lieutenant on 26 July 1870. After
returning to Germany, von Loën was in command of
21. Division headquarters in Frankfurt am Main from 23 May 1871 to 20
March 1873. He thereafter succeeded General von Bonin as Präses der
General-Ordens-Kommission (President of the
Commission of Military Orders), and
office he held from 1873 until May of 1879.
Having been
brevetted as General der Infanterie on 22 March 1876, he retired from
active duty (zur Disposition gestellt) on 13 May 1879 and was named as
Generaladjutant to Kaiser Wilhelm I. His official promotion (Patent) to the
rank of General der Infanterie went into effect on 18 September 1880. Von
Loën continued to serve as Generaladjutant with Wilhelm I.'s successor,
Kaiser Friedrich III.
