General Heinrich Graf
von Lehndorff served as adjutant general to Prussian Kaiser Wilhelm I. and
was in command of the Kaiser's Leibgendarmerie during the pre Great War
years. Heinrich was the son of a former Prussian brigade commander. He began his
military career in 1848 as an officer with the 5. Kürassier-Regiment and was
transferred in 1850 to the Regiment der Garde du Corps as a Sekonde-Lieutenant.
King Wilhelm I. took notice of Heinrich and assigned him as one of his
aide-de-camps in 1866. In that same year, von Lehndorff saw his first military
action with the start of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher
Krieg) and the Battle of Königgrätz.
Graf von Lehndorff later also participated in the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg) as an
Oberst-Lieutenant serving on staff at Prussia's Great Headquarters. Graf von
Lehndorff was thereafter named Commander of the Leibgendarmerie in
Berlin, and in 1877 was brought into Kaiser Wilhelm's headquarters as
General à la suite. This status was elevated to Generaladjutant on
22 March 1885. On 16 February 1891, General von Lehndorff was designated à la
suite to the Regiment der Garde du Corps; he was additionally a life-long member
of the Prussian House of Lords (Preußisches Herrenhaus).
