The son of Grand Duke Karl Friedrich of
Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, Karl Alexander succeeded his father as Regent
from 1853 and continued his father's progressive policies until his
death in 1901. He is best remembered for having restored the Wartburg
and having established the Weimar Museum of Art. He served in the
military as a colonel general with the rank of field marshal.
