Karl Anton was the eldest son of and Karl Fürst von
Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen, and thus later himself Prince of the House
of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen from 1849 to 1885. He was also the last
ruler of the Hohenzollern lands before they were incorporated into
Prussia. In 1849, he was decorated with Prussia's highest order of chivalry, the
Schwarzer Adler-Orden (Order of the Black Eagle.)
As Prince of Hohenzollern,
Fürst Karl Anton served as Prussia's Minister
President from 1858 to 1862. He simultaneously was in command of Prussia's VII.
Armee-Korps, headquartered in Munster, from 1858 to 1860. He was married to Princess Josephine of
Baden, and their son Anton was killed in action during the Battle
of Königgrätz in 1866. His son Karl I. (Carol I) was King of
Romania from 1881 to 1914. Prince Karl Anton died on 2 June 1885 in
Sigmaringen.
