Heinrich XIII. Prinz Reuß
served as a Prussian cavalry officer and adjutant general prior to the Great War. Heinrich's brother Prinz Heinrich VII. was likewise a Prussian cavalry officer and Generaladjutant in Kaiser Wilhelm I.'s court. Heinrich XIII.'s military career began in 1849 with the 12. Husaren-Regiment (Hussars), a unit which took part in quelling the so-called Baden Revolution of 1848-1849 (Badische Revolution). He took part in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg); he also saw action in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg) as an officer with Regiment der Garde du Corps.

Heinrich XIII. was selected in 1873 as aide-de-camp to Kaiser Wilhelm I. As a Generalmajor, he was in command of 29. Kavallerie-Brigade and then 11. Kavallerie-Brigade, before being promoted to General-Lieutenant on 1 January 1885 and taking command of 14. Division in Düsseldorf from 1886 to 1888. He retired from active duty and was brought in as General à la suite to Kaiser Wilhelm I. 
Heinrich XIII. was later appointed by Kaiser Wilhelm II. to the Preußisches Herrenhaus (Prussian House of Lords).
