Preußen: Botschafter, Generaladjutant SM, General der

Prinz Heinrich VII. Reuß served in the Imperial German diplomatic corps and
was an adjutant general in Wilhelm I.'s military entourage. Prinz Heinrich
joined 8. Ulanen-Regiment in 1848 but later chose to focus on a diplomatic
career path. He worked at the Prussian embassy in Paris from 1854 to 1863. He
was sent in 1868 to St. Petersburg as a special envoy for the North German
Confederation (Norddeutscher Bund).
Following
the victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71,
Kaiser Wilhelm I. named Prinz Heinrich as Imperial Germany's first ambassador to
Russia; he was thus designated General à la suite on 18 August 1871 and
then promoted to brevet General-Lieutenant on 16 December 1871. While in Russia,
Heinrich VII. was elevated to Generaladjutant to Wilhelm I. on 8 May
1873. He was transferred in 1877 to open the new German Embassy in
Constantinople, Turkey, and one year later was sent to Vienna. Although no
longer a soldier, Prinz Heinrich was promoted to General-Lieutenant on
22 March 1877, then later to General der Kavallerie on 20 September 1884.
