Gustav Graf von Götzen functioned during the pre-War years as military
Governor in German East Africa from 1895 to 1905 as Imperial Governor and Schutztruppe
commander. After studying law and political science in France, he
entered military service in 1885, joining a Prussian Guards cavalry unit. In
1890, Graf von Götzen was sent to the German Embassy in Rome to function as the
site's military attaché. It was during this time that he began with several
noted expeditions to Africa and Asia Minor (Turkey.) Götzen then served from
1896 to 1898 as Prussian military attaché in the United States. He was promoted
to Major in 1901 and dispatched to serve as Governor and head of the
Schutztruppe in Dar es Salaam, German East Africa.
