General-Lieutenant Friedrich Wilhelm von Gersdorff was the
Kingdom of Saxony's first recognized Chief of General Staff. As a young cavalry
major, Gersdorff saw action in Poland in 1807 and in Austria in 1809. As a
Generalmajor, he was appointed Chief of General Staff, functioning in that role
from 1810 through 1813, when he was replaced by General Johann Freiherr von
Zezschwitz. He continued, however, in the role of chief military advisor to King
Friedrich August I. of Saxony.
