General Karl von Endres served from 1905 until his death in late 1907 as Bavarian Chief of General Staff. His brother Nikolaus also served in the Bavarian military forces at the rank of General der Infanterie. As a 22-year old, Karl von Endres volunteered for service in a Bavarian field artillery, fighting alongside his Prussian counterparts during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.

Ritter von Endres's military career saw him serving as Royal Bavarian I. Army Corps chief of staff. From 1901 to 1905, he worked in Berlin as Bavaria's military plenipotentiary at Great General Staff headquarters. He returned to Bavaria to command an infantry division, and in September 1905 Endres was selected to replace General Freiherr von Barth as Bavarian War Ministry.
