General der Infanterie Otto von Derenthall was a divisional commander adjutant general
in Kaiser Wilhelm I.'s retinue prior to the Great War. Otto enlisted in the 1.
Garde-Regiment zu Fuß in 1851, receiving his commission as an officer in the
Prussian Army in December 1852. He was a combatant with Garde-Grenadier-Regiment
Nr. 2 in both the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866
(Deutscher Krieg) and then the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer
Krieg).
Oberst von Derenthall returned in 1876 to
Potsdam to take command of his original unit, 1.
Garde-Regiment zu Fuß. In 1882, he was assigned command of 2.
Garde-Infanterie-Brigade, along with his duties as aide-de-camp in Kaiser
Wilhelm I.'s headquarters. He was elevated to General à la suite on 15
May 1883. Following an assignment as Commandant of Berlin, von Derenthall was in
command of 33. Infanterie-Division in Metz from 1 April 1887 to 11 July 1888. He was then
transferred to Schwerin to head up 17. Infanterie-Division headquarters, retiring from
active duty on 15 March 1890 with the brevet rank of General der Infanterie.
