Royal Saxon cavalry officer Oswald von Carlowitz headed up
Saxony's General Staff in 1867 at the rank of Oberstleutnant. He entered
military service in 1842 with the Saxon Garde-Reiter-Regiment and took part in
the First Schleswig War of 1848-1852. As a Rittmeister, Carlowitz became Prince
Albert's personal adjutant (he later served a King Albert's adjutant general).
As a Major,
von Carlowitz was on staff with 1. Reiter-Regiment when Saxon forces fought in
opposition to the Prussian kingdom during the Austro-Prussian War of
1866. He saw action during battles at Gitschin and Königgrätz,
where he was wounded in action. He was subsequently awarded the
Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the
Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. During the interim peacetime, von Carlowitz was
promoted to Oberst and soon thereafter, as commander of Saxony's
Garde-Reiter-Regiment, marched alongside his former enemy during the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He remained on active duty for about twenty
more years and was ultimately promoted to General der Kavallerie. Following his
official retirement in 1890, he continued service as an adjutant general in King
Albert's entourage.
