General Wilhelm von Brandenburg was a brigade-level commander in the
Imperial German armed forces, as well as an adjutant general to Kaiser Wilhelm
I. Wilhelm's twin brother Friedrich also served as adjutant general to the
Kaiser. Their father, Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von Brandenburg was an army
corps commander and Prussian Minister President from 1848 until his death in
1850. Wilhelm entered the military service in 1836 with the
Garde-Kürassier-Regiment. He was later transferred to 2. Garde-Ulanen-Regiment
and became the regimental commander in March of 1860. He lead these cavalry
troops during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg) and was
decorated for his outstanding leadership in the Battle at Königgrätz.
After the war with Austria, Wilhelm was assigned to
command 5. Kavallerie-Brigade in Frankfurt an der Oder and then 3.
Garde-Kavallerie-Brigade in Berlin. Upon promotion to Generalmajor in 1868, he
was named General à la suite by King Wilhelm I. while retaining his
brigade command. Following the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg),
von Brandenburg was promoted to General-Lieutenant and in 1873 was promoted to
Kaiser Wilhelm I.'s Generaladjutant. Along with his brother Friedrich,
Wilhelm was promoted to General der Kavallerie in September 1880. He was in
command for two years of Garde-Korps headquarters in Berlin, from 1882 to August
1884, when he retired from active duty (zur Disposition).
