Albrecht Besserer was a cavalry officer who briefly filled in as Bavaria's Minister of War in 1838-39. Soon after entering military service, he took part in the 1806-07 War of the Fourth Coalition. He also saw action in the 1809 War of the Fifth Coalition as well as the 1812 campaign against Russia. For his meritorious actions in battle, Besserer was awarded both the Militär-Max Joseph Orden and the Pour le Merite. On 24 June 1817, he was additionally enrolled into Bavarian nobility as Freiherr (Baron) Besserer von Thalfingen.

In the early 1830s, Besserer was chosen by Crown Prince (and later King) Maximilian II to be his aide-de-camp and Hofmarschall. Besserer was promoted in November 1833 to the rank of Generalmajor and simultaneously selected as King Ludwig I's adjutant general. Beginning in November 1838, Freiherr Besserer von Thalfingen was charged with running the administrative affairs of Bavarian's War Ministry. He remained in this function until unexpectedly passing away in February 1839 at the age of 51. His son Maximilian Besserer (1820-1903) also served in the Bavarian Army as a Generalmajor.
