Maximilian I. of the House
of Wittelsbach was the first ruler of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
Known as King Max, he reigned in Munich from 1806
until his death in 1825. Maximilian was the son of Friedrich Michael
von der Pfalz, Graf von Rappoltstein and Maria Franziska Dorothea
Princess of Pfalz-Sulzbach. He grew up in Strasbourg, France and event
served as a colonel in the French Army's Corps d'Alsace.
After the Elector of Bavaria Karl Theodor died in 1799, Maximilian
became his successor, known as Maximilian IV. Joseph, and ruling over
all areas controlled by the House of Wittelsbach. After ruling as King
of Bavaria for 19 years, Maximilian died in Nymphenberg Palace in
October 1825, turning his throne over to his son Ludwig I.
