Friedrich Graf von Baudissin was an admiral in the Prussian naval
forces and Admiral ā la suite in Kaiser Wilhelm II.'s entourage prior
to the Great War. He began his naval career in 1867 and was commissioned as an
Unterleutnant zur See on 19 August 1871. He was dispatched to the South Pacific
in 1884 to take command of the cruiser SMS Albatross and was
engaged in the Samoan Crisis standoff with the U.S. and Britain. Baudissin
later commanded the gunboat SMS Iltis, also in the Pacific.
From 1898 to 1902, Kapitän zur See von Baudissin piloted Kaiser
Wilhelm II.'s yacht the Hohenzollern and simultaneously served as
aide-de-camp to the Kaiser. His promotion to Kontre-Admiral was on 22
June 1901. He then took command of the cruiser SMS Hansa, which sailed
to ports throughout East Asia. Baudissin was promoted to Vize-Admiral on 27
January 1905 and assigned to Wilhelm II.'s royal suite and duty in the
Admiralstab (Imperial Admiralty Staff). He was named Chef des Admiralstabes
and promoted to Admiral on 27 January 1908. Graf von Baudissin retired from
active duty (zur Disposition) in September 1909 and was decorated with the
Schwarzer Adlerorden (Order of the Black Eagle), Prussia's highest order of
chivalry.
