He was dispatched to the South Pacific in 1884 to take command of the cruiser SMS Albatross and was engaged in the Samoan Crisis standoff with the U.S. and Britain. He then took command of the cruiser SMS Hansa, which sailed to ports throughout East Asia. Baudissin was promoted to Vize-Admiral on 27 January 1905 and assigned to Wilhelm II.'s royal suite and duty in the Admiralstab (Imperial Admiralty Staff). He was named Chef des Admiralstabes and promoted to Admiral on 27 January 1908. Graf von Baudissin retired from active duty (zur Disposition) in September 1909 and was decorated with the Schwarzer Adlerorden (Order of the Black Eagle), Prussia's highest order of chivalry.
