Ernst Franz Kaspar Freiherr von Barth zu Harmating
(13.07.1849 - 29.08.1934)
place of birth:  Eurasburg, Oberbayern
Königreich Bayern:  Generalstabschef, Generalleutnant

General Ernst Freiherr von Barth served for four years as Royal Bavarian Army chief of general staff. Ernst was the son of Bavarian landowner Anton von Barth zu Harmating and his wife Flora von Krauß, the granddaughter of Bavaria's first War Minister Johann Nepomuk von Triva. Ernst's twin brother Hugo also served and attained the rank of Generalmajor.

Freiherr von Barth began his military career just after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 when he joined the Infanterie-Leib-Regiment in Munich as an officer candidate. He then deployed to France during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and saw action in battles at Wörth, Beaumont, Sedan and during the siege of Paris. Back in Bavaria, he rose steadily through the ranks with postings at General Staff headquarters in Munich and as General von Xylander's II. Armeekorps chief of staff in Würzburg. In the fall of 1901, Freiherr von Barth was promoted to Generalmajor and selected to replace Karl Ritter von Lobenhoffer as Bavarian chief of general staff, a position he held for almost four years. When he retired from active duty in 1905, Generalleutnant von Barth was honored with the brevet rank of General der Infanterie.
