Prince
of Prussia and soldier and Generaloberst, Albrecht was the
fourth and youngest child of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. and Queen Luise
von Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Albrecht's two brothers were also Prussian
Kings, Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-61, and Wilhelm I. 1861-88 (German
Emperor beginning in 1871). Albrecht's son Friedrich Wilhelm Albrecht
also served in the Prussian forces, attaining the rank of
Generalfeldmarschall.
Albrecht joined military service in 1819. As royalty, he was decorated in
that same year with Prussia's highest order of chivalry, the Schwarzer
Adler-Orden (Order of the Black Eagle.) Prinz Albrecht later served as a cavalry commander during the Austro-Prussian War of
1866. During the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, the prince later was in command of a
Prussian cavalry division. Prinz Albrecht eventually retired from
military service at the rank of Generaloberst. He additionally had three sons
who also served as Prussian military officers: Generalfeldmarschall
Albrecht von Preußen, Generalleutnant
Wilhelm Graf von Hohenau, and Major Friedrich Graf von Hohenau.
