General der Kavallerie
General Emil von Xylander was a Royal Bavarian Army officer who commanded at
the corps level during the inter-war years. He was born into an old
Kurpfalz-Bavarian aristocratic family of military officers, including his father
General Joseph von Xylander and his brother Heinrich, who was also a Bavarian
general. During the Second World War, Emil's son Rudolf served as a Generalmajor
in the Wehrmacht.
Emil von Xylander launched
his career with the cavalry in 1851 when he joined with the 3rd
Chevauleger-Regiment in Dieuze. He thus took part in the Austro-Prussian
War of 1866 in opposition to the Prussians. Four years later, he was
fighting on the side of Berlin during the Franco-Prussian War
of 1870-71, serving as a staff officer with Bavaria's 2nd Infantry Division. After
the war, his career progressively saw him serve as commander of the 1st Cavalry
Brigade, Inspector-General of Military Penal Institutions, Bavarian Liaison at
Great German Headquarters, commander of 5th Division in Nürnberg, and commander
of II. Army Corps in Würzburg. Following ten years at this post, Xylander
ultimately retired from active duty in 1905 at the rank of General der
Kavallerie. In 1911, von Xylander received the honorary brevet rank of
Generaloberst.
