Hans Wilhelm von Werder
began his military career in 1852 and was engaged in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 as a staff officer with VIII. Armeekorps, seeing action at Münchengratz and Königgrätz. Von Werder also fought in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, serving as a staff officer with 13th Infantry Division. In peacetime Prussia, he commanded 50th Infantry Brigade and then 1st Infantry Division in Königsberg.

In the summer of 1891, Generalleutnant von Werder was chosen to succeed Paul Bronsart von Schellendorff as commander of Prussia's I. Armeekorps Headquarters in Königsberg. He was promoted to General der Infanterie the following year and remained in command until retiring from active duty in January 1895. He was laid to rest a couple years later at the age of 63.
His grandfather Hans von Werder (1771-1837) served as a Prussian Generalleutnant, while his father also named Hans von Werder (1802-1851) served at the rank of Major. Hans Wilhelm von Werder's son Hans Karl von Werder (1867-1923) was a Prussian Oberst and a brigade-level commander during World War One.
