General Franz Karl von
Werder headed up Imperial Germany's I. Armeekorps headquarters in Königsberg
from 1854 to 1863. Upon entering military service in 1806, von Werder was later
engaged in the German Campaign of 1813 (Befreiungskriege) for which he
received the Iron Cross 2nd Class. He then served with the following command
positions over his 60-year career: 1835 - 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß; 1841 - 11.
Infanterie-Brigade; 1848 - 12. Infanterie-Division; 1854 - I. Armeekorps.
Beginning in 1859, Franz von Werder served as both corps commander and military governor of
the Prussian Province. General Franz Karl von Werder was designated in 1857 à la
suite to 1. Garde-Regiment and later as Chef of 3. Ostpreußisches
Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 4. His son General der Infanterie Bernhard von Werder
(1823-1907) served as adjutant general to Kaiser Wilhelm I. and Kaiser
Friedrich III.
