General Graf von Wartensleben served as commanding general of Prussian III.
Armeekorps from 1884 to 1888. Following extensive university studies, von
Wartensleben entered military service in 1844 as a one-year volunteer. In 1848,
he was commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant with the cavalry. He fought as a
cavalry major during the Danish War of 1864 (Deutsch-Dänischer Krieg)
and was attached to Great General Staff during the Austro-Prussian War of
1866 (Deutscher Krieg).
The outbreak of the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 saw von Wartensleben as a staff officer with
Prussia's I. Armee and seeing action at Spichern, Gravelotte, and
Amiens. He was then assigned to function as Südarmee commander General von
Manteuffel's chief of staff. After the war, Graf von Wartensleben served
as Kommandant of Berlin and in 1884 was selected to replace General von Pape as
commanding general of III. Armeekorps, also in Berlin. Upon his retirement in
1888, he was designated à la suite of Dragoner-Regiment von Arnim, and
in 1903 was appointed for life to the Prussian House of Lords (Preußisches
Herrenhaus). Graf von Wartensleben was married to Agnes von Podbielski, the
daughter of Prussian General Theophil von Podbielski.
