General Graf von Wartensleben
served as commanding general of Prussian III. Armeekorps from 1884 to 1888. Following extensive university studies, von Wartensleben entered military service in 1844 as a one-year volunteer. In 1848, he was commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant with the cavalry. He fought as a cavalry major during the Danish War of 1864 (Deutsch-Dänischer Krieg) and was attached to Great General Staff during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg).

The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 saw von Wartensleben as a staff officer with Prussia's I. Armee and seeing action at Spichern, Gravelotte, and Amiens. He was then assigned to function as Südarmee commander General von Manteuffel's chief of staff.  After the war, Graf von Wartensleben served as Kommandant of Berlin and in 1884 was selected to replace General von Pape as commanding general of III. Upon his retirement in 1888, he was designated à la suite of Dragoner-Regiment von Arnim, and in 1903 was appointed for life to the Prussian House of Lords (Preußisches Herrenhaus).
