Royal Prussian general officer Konstantin von Voigts-Rhetz
began his military career in 1827 with the 9th Infantry Regiment in
Stargard, Pomerania. He spent most of his early career working on staff
at various corps headquarters, as well as at the Great General Staff in
Berlin. He was also director of the Allgemeiner
Kriegsdepartement (General War Department) at the War Ministry from
1858 to 1960.
During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Voigts-Rhetz
functioned as Chief of Staff in Prince Friedrich Karl von Preußen's
First Army, which saw action at Königgrätz. After the war,
he became Governor General of the new province of Hannover, and also
the commander of the newly-formed X. Army Corps. He led this corps with
great success during the Franco- Prussian War of 1870-71,
battling at Metz and Vionville-Mars-la-Tour. Remaining as X. Army
Corps commander until his retirement in 1873, the general later settled in
Wiesbaden, where he died in April of 1877. The 79th Infantry Regiment in
Hannover was named in his honor. His brothers William and Julius also served as
generals in the Prussian Army.
