Hermann Freiherr von Vietinghoff genannt Scheel
(25.10.1851 - 27.05.1933)
place of birth:  Thorn, Pommern  (Torun, Poland)
Königreich Preußen:  Stellv KG,  General der Kavallerie

General Hermann von Vietinghoff-Scheel was a cavalry officer in the Imperial German Army from 1869 through the end of World War One. He initially saw front-line action as a lieutenant during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. In 1884, he was the personal adjutant of Crown Prince Friedrich III, and upon the Prince's death became an aide-de-camp to Kaiser Wilhelm II. General von Vietinghoff later succeeded Friedrich von Bock und Polach as IX. Army Corps commander in 1907, after which he retired from active military duty.

At almost 63 years of age, however, General von Vietinghoff was reactivated in 1914 when Imperial Germany invaded Belgium. For the duration of the Great War, he functioned as General von Linsingen's Acting Commander at II. Army Corps headquarters in Stettin. As the hostilities came to a close in late 1918 and revolts broke out at the shipyards in Stettin, Vietinghoff signed shoot-to-kill orders against the workers. As a result, he was dismissed from the military and then moved to his retirement estate in Baden-Baden. Among the regular visitors he entertained at the estate were Kaiser Wilhelm II's brothers Prince Oskar and Prince Heinrich. The general passed away in 1933 at the age of 81.
