Adolf Eduard von Thile
(02.04.1784 - 24.08.1861)
place of birth:  Dresden
Königreich Preußen:  KG,  General der Infanterie

General von Thile
was a royal Prussian general who commanded III. Armeekorps and later VIII. Armeekorps. Adolf Eduard was the son of Prussian general Alexander Heinrich von Thile and spouse Henriette Friedricke. Adolf's brother Ludwig was Chief of King Friedrich Wilhelm III's Military Cabinet. Young Adolf launched his military career in 1795 with Infanterie-Regiment "von Arnim." The War of the Fourth Coalition 1806-1807 (Vierter Koalitionskrieg) found von Thile as a young general staff officer engaged in the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt.

Von Thile continued serving as a staff officer with German forces under Napoleon I as the French invaded Russia in 1812 (Russland Feldzug). For his action, he was awarded the Pour le Mérite order. During the German Campaign of 1813-1815 (Befreiungskriege), he functioned as Chief of Staff in Korps Kleist. He thus saw action in all of the decisive conflicts and was awarded both the Iron Cross First Class and Oak leave cluster for his Blue Max. Following these conflicts, von Thile was appointed in 1830 to be the first commander of 7. Division in Magdeburg. After eight years, he was transferred to Frankfurt an der Oder to succeed Wilhelm Prinz von Preußen (later Kaiser Wilhelm I.) as commanding general of III. Armeekorps.

In 1840, Generalleutnant von Thile was assigned his final command as head of VIII. Armeekorps headquartered in Koblenz. In this capacity, he became aware of an intense and growing unrest within his officer corps, to the point he officially reported this issue in 1845 to Prussian War Minister Hermann von Boyen. Von Thile's suspicions were not misplaced, and in March 1849 the order went out to mobilize his troops in order to quell what would be known as die Badische Revolution, the Baden Revolution of 1848-1849. At 64, however, General von Thile felt he was no longer up to the task and therefore retired from active duty. He returned to Frankfurt an der Oder, where he lived until the age of 77. General von Thile's marriage to Auguste Ulrike Antoinette von Schöning produced seven children. Two of his sons, Rudolf and Hugo, also served as generals in the Imperial German Army.
