General von Sperling was an Imperial Prussian general officer
who was military governor of Cologne and briefly served as acting
commander at the corps level. He was the eldest son of Prussian
Generalmajor Oskar von Sperling (1824-99) and Pauline von Klaß. Kurt
von Sperling's sister Gertrud was the wife of Field Marshal Paul von
Hindenburg.
After taking part in the Franco-Prussian
War of 1870-71, von Sperling became a general staff officer
and a commander at the various levels. After attaining the rank of
Generalleutnant, he then functioned as Military Governor of Cologne
from May 1907 to April 1911. He was brevetted to General der Infanterie
in 1908. At the outbreak of the Great War, von
Sperling was Kurt von Pritzelwitz' acting commander at VI. Army Corps
HQ in Breslau before he unexpectedly died one month later.
