General August Wilhelm von Seebeck was the commander of Prussia's
X. Armeekorps during the years prior to the Great War. Seebeck launched his
military service career in 1852 when he enlisted in 31. Infanterie-Regiment in
Erfurt, receiving his promotion to Sekonde-Lieutenant on 6 December 1853. He was
tasked as 8. Division adjutant during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg)
and fought at Königgrätz, Münchengrätz, and Preßburg.
Prior to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg),
he was transferred to X. Armeekorps general staff. It was in this role that
Seebeck saw action in numerous battles, including at Vionville,
Gravelotte, Orléans, Le Mans, and Montoire. His
comportment and leadership during the war resulted in his being decorated with
both classes of the Iron Cross. After the war, King Wilhelm I. additionally
recognized Seeback's contributions on 16 June 1871 by elevating him into the
German nobility. In 1876, von Seebeck was sent to Karlsruhe to function as
General August von Werder's chief of staff at XIV. Armeekorps headquarters. Soon
thereafter, he was transferred to XI. Armeekorps headquarters in Kassel to work
as General von Bose's chief of staff.
With a promotion to Oberst,
August von Seebeck served from 1882 to 1886 as commander of 1. Großherzoglich
Hessisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 115 in Darmstadt. He lead the troops of
30. Infanterie-Brigade until 1889, when he was promoted to General-Lieutenant
and given command of 4. Division in Bromberg. The following year, he was
transferred to Trier to command the soldiers of Prussia's 16. Division.
Seebeck's final command was from 1893 to 1899 at X. Armeekorps headquarters in
Hannover. He went into retirement (zur Disposition) on 4 April 1899 and passed
away in November 1914. General August von Seebeck's maternal grandfather was
Prussian Chief of General Staff Wilhelm von Krauseneck. Seebeck's second wife
Sophie Charlotte was the daughter of General der Infanterie Bernhard von Gélieu.
