General Hans
Wilhelm von Schack was the commander of Prussia's
IV. Armeekorps in Magdeburg from 1858 to 1866. Schack was the son of
Generalmajor Wilhelm Georg von Schack and Auguste Elisabeth von Schack, nee von
Borcke. His soldiering career began in 1801 when he was enrolled as a cadet in
Kalisch, then later in Berlin. As a Fähnrich, von Schack participated in the
War of the Fourth Coalition 1806-1807 (Vierter Koalitionskrieg).
August von Schack was then promoted to Sekonde-Lieutenant and
assigned to the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment. The regiment was engaged in the French
Invasion of Russia 1812 (Russland Feldzug), where he was wounded and thereafter
decorated with the Pour le Mérite order. After a promotion and transfer
to 2. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß, he again went to war during the German Campaign
of 1813-1815 (Befreiungskriege). He saw action in most of the major battles
and was awarded with the Iron Cross Second Class.
Post-war
Prussia saw von Schack as commander of 20. Landwehr-Infanterie Regiment
in 1839, then 12. Infanterie-Regiment in 1841, and 32. Infanterie-Regiment in
1844. In March 1845, he was charged with heading up 8. Infanterie-Brigade in
Erfurt. As commander of 3. Division, General von Schack lead his forces in
putting down the Baden Revolution 1848-1849 (Badische Revolution). As a
General-Lieutenant, he was transferred to command 15. Division in Cologne, and
in June 1858 he replaced General Wilhelm von Radziwill as commander of IV.
Armeekorps in Magdeburg. He had the additional responsibility of functioning as
Military Governor of Saxony. He was briefly charged with command of VII.
Armeekorps in 1862 and in 1863 was awarded Prussia's most prestigious
decoration, the Black Eagle (Schwarzer Adler). Still in command of IV.
Armeekorps, he died in September 1866 of a stroke and was succeeded by Gustav
von Alvensleben. General von Schack's brothers August, Ferdinand, and Ferdinand
Wilhelm also served in the Prussian Army at the rank of Generalmajor.
