Prussian general Hans von Schachtmeyer
was in command of the XIII Army Corps in Stuttgart from 1878 to 1886. After attending the Cadet Corps, he entered military service in 1833 as a second lieutenant in the 2. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß (2nd Foot Guards Regiment) in Berlin. In 1855, Hauptmann von Schachtmeyer was named Director of the Gewehr-Prüfungs-Kommission (Arms Testing Committee), where he became the technical advisor and trusted confidant of Prince Wilhelm (Kaiser Wilhelm I).

At the outbreak of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Schachtmeyer was promoted to Generalmajor and placed in command of the 32nd Infantry Brigade. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 saw Schachtmeyer promoted to the rank of Generalleutnant and commanding the 21st Infantry Division of the Third Army. When XI Corps Commander General von Gersdorff was killed in action during the Battle of Sedan, Schachtmeyer was placed in charge of those troops through the end of the conflict.

After the war, General von Schachtmeyer served as the Military Governor of Strasbourg from 1875 to 1878. He then replaced von Schwartzkoppen as commander of XIII Army Corps Headquarters in Stuttgart, retiring from active military service in 1886.
