Werner Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg
(16.04.1846 - 07.05.1910)
place of birth: Regensburg, Oberpfalz
Königreich
Bayern: KG,
General der Infanterie
General Reichlin von Meldegg was a Royal Bavarian Army officer who was in
command of Bavaria's II. Army Corps prior to the Great War. As a
precursor to his military path, Reichlin initially was a student at the Royal
Pagerie in Munich, an elite institute dedicated to preparing Bavaria's young
aristocracy for military and political careers. He entered active duty in 1864
as a Sekonde-Lieutenant and thus saw action during the 1866 war with Prussia,
where he was seriously wounded during battle at Nördlingen. He
nonetheless continued his military service and saw action during the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Serving as an Ober-Lieutenant in
Bavaria's 2. Infanterie-Regiment Kronprinz, he once again was wounded during an
engagement at Sedan in September 1870.
After a two-year
stint at Great General Staff Headquarters in Berlin, Reichlin
returned to Munich in order to serve in Bavaria's War Ministry. He later
returned to Berlin where he functioned as Bavarian Military Plenipotentiary from
1895 to 1901. He then headed up the 2nd Infantry Division in Augsburg, followed
by a year and half as commander of Bavaria's II. Army Corps in Würzburg. He
retired from active duty in 1908 having been awarded numerous decorations: the
Ritterkreuz des
Verdienstordens der Bayerischen Krone, the Militärverdienstordens II. Klasse,
and the Eiserne Kreuz von 1870 (Iron Cross for Franco-Prussian War.)
