General der Infanterie Karl Ritter von Orff was a Bavarian career
officer who commanded Bavarian I. Army Corps for 15 years during
peacetime. Von Orff joined Bavaria's cadet corps as an 11-year old and entered
active duty with the 6th Regiment. By the outbreak of the Austro-Prussian
War of 1866, Oberstleutnant von Orff was engaged with the general staff of
Bavarian 3rd Division. He again saw action in the Franco-Prussian War
of 1870-71, heading up Bavaria's 2nd Infantry Brigade and earning the
Militär-Max-Joseph Order for his service.
During peacetime,
General von Orff was appointed commander of the Bavarian II. Army Corps in
Würzburg, a post he held for more than 15 years. Karl von Orff was promoted to
General der Infanterie in 1880 retired from active duty in 1890 as I. Army Corps
commander. On the occasion of his retirement, Prince-Regent Luitpold awarded von
Orff the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown (Verdienstorden
der Bayerischen Krone). General von Orff's daughter Karoline was the spouse
of Bavarian Minister of War Generaloberst Otto Kreß von Kressenstein.
