General von Obernitz served as a corps commander and an
adjutant general to Kaiser Wilhelm I. He received the Pour
le Mérite honor for valor displayed during the Austro-Prussian War of
1866 (Deutscher Krieg). Von Obernitz was promoted to General-Lieutenant on
26 June 1879 and then headed up a division during the Franco-Prussian
War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg).
After the war,
General von Obernitz was named an honorary citizen of
the city of Stuttgart. During peacetime, he served a General à la Suite
to Kaiser Wilhelm I. and was then elevated to Generaladjutant in 1874. General von Obernitz replaced August Graf
von Werder as commander of XIV. Army Corps headquartered in Karlsruhe,
a posting he held for nine years from 1879 to 1888. On 22 March 1884, he was
designated Chef of Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 4 and retired from active
military service in August of 1888.
