General Emil von Meerscheidt-Hüllessem served during Prussia's inter-war
years as commander of XV. Armeekorps headquarters in Strasbourg, Alsace. Emil
began his military career in 1857 as a Portepée-Fähnrich with the 9.
Infanterie-Regiment in his hometown of Stargard, Pomerania. He was then
commissioned in December 1857 as a Sekonde-Lieutenant. With a transfer in 1860
to the newly-formed 6. Pommersches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 49, Meerscheidt was
later attached to the regiment's Ersatz-Bataillon during the Austro-Prussian
War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg).
In the aftermath of the war,
Meerscheidt found himself changing over to the Prussian naval forces and went
into battle as a company-level commander during the Franco-Prussian War of
1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg). In 1876, he left the
Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial Navy) and returned to the Army as a company
commander with the 4. Ostpreußisches Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 5 in Danzig. His
first command came in May 1889 with Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 55, then in May 1892
as commander of 42. Infanterie-Brigade in Frankfurt a.M. Thereafter, he headed
up 11. Division in Breslau from February 1896 to May 1899.
General-Lieutenant von Meerscheidt-Hüllessem was then assigned on 22
May 1899 as provisional commander of XV. Armeekorps in Strasbourg, with his
status officially changed to commanding general of the corps on 3 July 1899.
Following extended convalescent leave in Switzerland, General-Lieutenant von
Meerscheidt-Hüllessem retired from active service on 9 June 1900 and was
brevetted as a General der Infanterie. His stepbrother General Oskar von
Meerscheidt-Hüllessem was the commander of V. Armeekorps headquarters in Posen
from 1886 to 1888, while stepbrother Hermann was a brigade-level commander.
