Prussian general Hans von Kretschmann began his military
career in 1863 when he joined Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 8 in Frankfurt
an der Oder. Major von Kretschmann saw action during the Franco-Prussian
War of 1870-71, serving in the general staff of Constantin von
Alvensleben's Third Army Corps. After the war, he was transferred to Posen
where he served for five years as General Hugo von Kirchbach's V. Army
Corps chief of staff. He went on to command a peace- time infantry
division and, in 1896, was awarded by Kaiser Wilhelm II with the Roten
Adler Orden I. Klasse (Order of the Red Eagle, First Class,
with Oak Cluster and Swords). Von Kretschmann passed away in 1899 in
his hometown of Berlin.
