Prussian general Hans von Kretschmann began his military
career in 1863 when he joined Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 8 in Frankfurt
an der Oder. Major von Kretschmann saw action during the Franco-Prussian
War of 1870-71, serving in the general staff of Constantin von
Alvensleben's III. Armee-Korps. After the war, he was transferred to Posen
where he served for five years as General Hugo von Kirchbach's V. Armee-Korps chief of staff. He went on to command a peace-time
infantry division. General von Kretschmann passed away in 1899 in
his hometown of Berlin.
