Richard von Klitzing served as peacetime commander of Prussia's IV.
Armeekorps in Magdeburg. Following his cadet corps (Kadettenanstalt) education
in Bensberg and Berlin, von Klitzing launched his military career in 1859 as an
office aspirant in Infantry Regiment Nr. 31. He had transferred to 16.
Infanterie-Brigade by 1866 when Germany went to war with Austria. Four years
later, the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 found Premier-Lieutenant von
Klitzing serving as a general staff officer with IV. Armeekorps.
During the
inter-war years, von Klitzing advanced through the ranks with commands including
the 2. Hanseatisches Infanterie-Regiment, 34. Infanterie-Brigade, and 10.
Infanterie-Division in Posen. He additionally lead the elite troops of the 1.
Garde-Division in Potsdam from 1894 to 1897. General von Klitzing was then
designated provisional commander of IV. Armeekorps, officially replacing Karl
von Hänisch as corps commander on 27 January 1898. He maintained this posting
until retirement from active duty in January 1903, when he was replaced by Paul
von Hindenburg. Upon being discharged,
General von Klitzing was named Chef of Infanterie-Regiments „Hamburg“
(2. Hanseatisches) Nr. 76.
